Trade name for an oil-based plastic material
used in modelling. It was invented 1897 for
children but is also used by architects and
engineers; the earliest space suits were
modelled in Plasticine. Plasticine is also
used as a landing point in jumping events
(human and equestrian), because it marks
clearly and is easily smoothed; as a means of
deadening the noise of explosives in
demolition practice; and, in combination with
lead, as ballast in small boats.
